RAW Charging and National Trust – Working towards a cleaner and greener environment at iconic locations
Posted on Tuesday, Apr 29, 2025
In 2023, RAW signed a contract with National Trust to develop and install EV charging at suitable sites across the Trust’s portfolio in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, ensuring the location and design sympathetically integrates the infrastructure into its environment.
In 2025, National Trust celebrates its 130th anniversary. To mark this, National Trust is leading the UK in its fight against climate change and has committed to several actions: restore nature, creating 250,000 hectares of thriving, nature-rich land by 2035; ensuring equal access to nature, beauty and history; inspire more people to care for nature and heritage; and adapt to a changing world.
RAW’s work with National Trust is helping to deliver these actions.
Key Facts:
Since 2023, RAW and National Trust have installed over 240 EV charging bays at 26 National Trust properties.
Nearly 300 MWh of energy delivered to date — equivalent to powering close to one million electric vehicle miles.
Easter Sunday 2025 marked a record day on the network, with 2.75 MWh delivered.
EV chargers will be installed at a further 20 iconic National Trust’s locations in 2025.
Some sites coming soon include Montacute, Packwood, Grey’s Court, Stourhead and Hatchlands.
Over 70 further sites are currently in the design stage as RAW continues its roll-out across the National Trust estate.
A recent installation at Pont ar Daf in Wales now ranks among the UK’s highest EV chargepoints, located approximately 440m above sea level at the foot of the iconic Pen y Fan.
Decarbonising the UK
National Trust is at the forefront of helping nature to survive and help us all reach the global target of protecting 30% of land. In the UK 20% of our total greenhouse gas emissions come from petrol and diesel cars. These greenhouse gases result in reduced air quality, which in turn affects plant health and soil quality as a result of acid rain and directly harms our wildlife.
RAW Charging and the National Trust are working together to help tackle that. RAW has an enviable track record of delivering EV charging at some of the UK’s most iconic locations including Charlecote Park for the National Trust and Pennyhill Park Hotel for Small Luxury Hotels of the World. By investing ahead of the curve in EV charging RAW Charging is helping visitors and members to National Trust properties decarbonise their transport as they know fast, efficient and easy to use EV chargers await.
With 1 in 3 new vehicles sold in the UK being electric, National Trust and RAW’s investment will help keep Britain moving. Visitors to a growing number of National Trust’s iconic locations can now travel in confidence, knowing that they will be able to charge their car on arrival with RAW’s state of the art EV chargers.
The Collaboration
Most chargers will be AC destination chargers allowing visitors to charge for half a day or more spent enjoying National Trust’s estates, houses and gardens. However, DC rapid charging hubs will be made available at a small number of National Trust places, where the visit time is shorter than standard, or if the location is convenient for drivers to charge during a short break from longer journeys. Stourhead in Wiltshire is expected to be the first National Trust site with DC, rapid charging bays, later this year.
Once complete, the rollout is expected to be one of RAW’s largest, investing up to £12 million in the project.
This installation landmark with National Trust marks another milestone in RAW’s growing network. RAW are experts in destination charging, Connecting Amazing Places, providing bespoke solutions that focus on the driver making EV charging faster, more accessible, and more convenient for hospitality and leisure customers.
Jason Simpson, CEO, RAW Charging, commented:
"We are thrilled to work with the National Trust in our shared mission to make transport cleaner and greener. By integrating our EV charging infrastructure into some of the most iconic and historic locations across England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, we are not only supporting the National Trust’s commitment to restoring nature and ensuring equal access to beauty and history but also making it easier for visitors to transition to electric vehicles.
This collaboration marks a significant step towards a sustainable future, and we are proud to contribute to the National Trust’s vision of a climate-positive future. With 162 EV charging bays already installed and many more to come, we are excited to see the positive impact this will have on both the environment and the visitor experience.”
Patrick Begg, Outdoors and Natural Resources Director, National Trust, said:
"We are delighted to collaborate with RAW Charging in our mission to create a cleaner and greener environment. By integrating EV charging infrastructure across our estates, we are not only supporting the transition to electric vehicles but also enhancing the visitor experience. As we celebrate our 130th anniversary, this initiative aligns perfectly with our commitment to restore nature, ensure equal access to beauty and history, and inspire more people to care for our natural and cultural heritage. We look forward to seeing the positive impact this collaboration will have on both the environment and our visitors.”
