EV Charging Jargon Buster: What Drivers Should Know

Posted on Friday, Jan 23, 2026

Are you thinking about switching to an electric vehicle, or have you already made the leap? Either way, while EVs are becoming more mainstream, the language around charging can still feel confusing – especially if you are new to it all.

From AC vs. DC charging to roaming networks and payment types, understanding the basics can make charging your EV easier and more convenient. This jargon buster breaks down the key terms every EV driver should know, without the technical overload.

AC vs DC Charging: What’s the Difference?

One of the first terms you’ll come across when charging an EV is ‘AC or DC’. These refer to the type of electricity delivered to your car and significantly impact charging speed.

AC Charging (Alternating Current)

AC charging is the most common type and is typically found in:

  • Domestic EV chargers.

  • Workplace EV chargers.

  • Destination EV chargers such as hotels, gyms, and car parks.

AC chargers are slower than DC chargers, but they’re ideal for longer stays where your vehicle can charge while you’re parked. Most EV drivers use AC charging for everyday top-ups.

DC Charging (Direct Current)

DC charging, often referred to as rapid or ultra-rapid charging, is designed for speed. These chargers are usually found:

  • At service stations.

  • On major roads and motorways.

  • At dedicated rapid charging hubs.

DC chargers deliver power directly to your vehicle’s battery, allowing you to add significant range in a short amount of time. They’re perfect for long journeys or quick stops, but not for regular daily charging.

What Is “kW” and Why Does It Matter?

Charging speeds are measured in kilowatts (kW). The higher the kW rating, the faster your car can charge – although your vehicle’s maximum charging capability also plays a role.

  • Lower kW (e.g. 7–22kW): Common for AC charging.

  • Higher kW (e.g. 50–150kW+): Typical for DC rapid charging.

Understanding kW helps you choose the correct charger for your journey, manage charging time, and ensure your EV battery remains in optimal condition for longer.

What Are Roaming Partners?

EV charging isn’t limited to just one network. Many charging providers work with roaming partners, allowing drivers to access multiple networks using a single account, app, or payment method.

Roaming means:

  • Fewer apps to download.

  • Greater access to EV chargers across the UK.

  • More flexibility when travelling.

For EV drivers, this removes much of the stress from public charging and makes EV ownership more practical, especially on longer trips.

EV Payment Types: How Do You Pay to Charge?

One of the biggest concerns for new EV drivers is paying for EV charging. Fortunately, charging has become much more straightforward in recent years.

Common EV payment options include:

  • Contactless card payments.

  • Mobile apps linked to a charging account.

  • RFID cards or key fobs.

  • Subscription-based plans for frequent drivers.

Contactless payment is increasingly expected by drivers, offering a familiar, hassle-free way to charge without needing multiple accounts, additional items, or subscriptions.

What Is “Idle Time” or “Overstay”?

Some chargers charge an idle fee if a vehicle remains plugged in after charging has finished. This encourages drivers to move on once charging is complete and keeps the EV charging bays available for others.

You should check:

  • Whether idle fees apply.

  • How long you can stay parked once charging is complete.

A quick browse of the EV charger’s screen or app can give you the necessary information and help you avoid unexpected costs.

Can You Earn Rewards for EV Charging?

As EV charging evolves, so do the benefits for drivers. Many networks now offer loyalty incentives, such as RAW Charging’s RAW Rewards scheme.

EV drivers can earn rewards simply by charging on the RAW network. It’s designed to give something back to drivers who charge regularly, with exclusive discounts and offers available to members with a ChargePoint account and the ChargePoint app.

Whether you’re topping up locally or charging on longer journeys, it’s a simple way to get more value and added benefits from the charging you’re already doing.

Whether you’re researching your first EV or getting more confident with public charging, knowing the language puts you in control of your journey. EV charging doesn’t have to be complicated; once you understand the basics and demystify the jargon, it quickly becomes second nature.
